‘The inspiration was drawn from the need to explore and escape the urban entrapment we were both confined to. Shooting in a little cove in a small Italian village bordering Lake Como, luckily we found the cave just as the sun was touching the mountains, with the beauty of Italy’s Lake Como just out of my muses reach, beyond of the bars, trapped.’ – Kristian Eustace

How much pain would you take to feel loved?

‘When our civilization ends, and all our digital archives are destroyed, this will be a physical, accurate artifact of our society.’ -kardashian kolloquium

I created this work reflecting on the relationship between pain and feeling loved in a world driven by AI algorithms. ⁣There is no mirror for her selfie because humanity is the mirror. We are all the mirror.

“Algorithmic Beauty” has no beauty filters. The marks from plastic surgeries are displayed with grace and dignity like the battle scars of an endless war no one can win. ⁣

I wanted to offer a continuation of the Venus de Milo, a sculpture made over 2000 years ago that portrays an immortal Goddess beyond the reach of humans. ⁣

Today, it’s AIs algorithms that have God-like power over humanity. They influence beauty standards with the irresistible promise that those who follow will be rewarded by digital engagement disguised as love. And in the pursuit of that promise people will go through immense physical pain. This made me feel that maybe plastic surgery could be seen as an act of love and commitment to participate in a world of lies we are all part of. ⁣

I also chose the Venus de Milo because it is the personification of our “Fake it till you make it era”. When it was discovered in 1820 the Louvre museum actually broke a piece off the sculpture to pretend it was made by a more prestigious artist and time period. By the time people found out it was already the most famous sculpture in the world and no one cared. ⁣

Maybe the Venus de Milo is the best metaphor for our social media era; A fictional Goddess hyped with marketing and lies but that we all want to take a picture with.

Exploring the exotic island of Zakynthos in the Ionian sea for Vol. 1

Thanks to its fertility and breathtaking natural beauty Zakynthos used to be called “Fiore di Levante”, which means the flower of the east. Enticing beaches, towering mountains, quaint villages, seductive views, and gleaming turquoise waters make up this grecian getaway. We visited this exotic destination for Vol. 1. To see more images featuring muses in Zakynthos view Chapter 26 with Amanda, Chapter 32 with Gillian and Tess, and Chapter 33 with Lauren.

Entrancing Isabella has shed her insecurities and is now doing what she loves

[Beyond the Pines] What was the trip to Cannes with the BTP crew like?

[Isabella Kroon] The whole crew made me feel super welcome from the moment I walked in. I enjoyed every moment of the trip, which was at the most beautiful location by the way! I’m so happy I got to know everyone, we laughed a lot together, but we also could discuss serious stuff. It’s like going on a work trip as one big family!

[BTP] What was it like shooting with Mat, how did your shooting styles align?

[IK] Shooting with Mat was so much fun! I think our shooting styles aligned because of the fact that we’re both not afraid to experiment with new things. We’re both quite relaxed so the shoots had a really chill atmosphere. Like that, we could try some new styles and it was okay if it didn’t work out the first time. I also felt very comfortable shooting with him. After all, we took a lot of very cool pictures and videos and we had fun with the crew in between shoots!

[BTP] How did you get into modeling?

[IK] I started modeling 4,5 years ago when I was 14 years old. I got scouted on the streets multiple times since I was 12 years old, but it always turned out I was too short or too young. Eventually, I ended up with an agency in The Netherlands that scouted me on Instagram. I met them one week later and after my first test shoot, they signed me!

[BTP] What advice would you give aspiring models?

[IK] My advice would be to try and stay positive! You get rejected a lot in this industry and that can be very demotivating at some point. But remember that most models have been there and it’s ‘just’ a part of the job everyone goes through! Everyone has to start somewhere, right?

[BTP] What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

[IK] “Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for taking care of.”

[BTP] What are you grateful for?

[IK] I’m so grateful for the friends I have nowadays! They’re really what I needed lately. Also, I have to mention how grateful I am for meeting amazing new people and exploring different parts of the world because of modeling!

    [BTP] What’s important to you?

[IK] Most important to me is that the people close to me are healthy and safe. I don’t even think an explanation is needed with this one.

[BTP] How do you want to be perceived?

[IK] I want to be perceived as an example of the fact that you can do much more than you think if you put hard work into it. I started off as a shy, insecure girl who later struggled with some mental problems. I’ve been working on it for years and still am, but now I’m comfortable in my own skin and I’m finally starting to do the photoshoots and jobs that I love to do the most!

Midnight Studios Presents “And Love Said No” for SS23

For the Spring/Summer 2023 collection, Midnight Studios by Shane Gonzales presents “And Love Said No,” a collection in collaboration with iconic goth rock band, H.I.M. As a brand with roots in music and youth culture, Midnight Studios’ new collection pays homage to rock n’ roll’s evocation of emotion, blending romance and heartbreak with hard-hitting heavy metal melodies.

Spring/Summer 2023 sees the continuation of Midnight Studios’ tailoring codes with suiting that features jackets with Pagoda shoulders complimented by exaggerated, wide leg trousers. Classic Doc Marten boots are seen paired with oversized ponchos and lounge pants in heavyweight knit. A matching calfskin leather trucker jacket and trouser set covered in a layer of delicate tulle, represents the romance of lyrics that transcend into the dark, melancholic sounds of metal synonymous with H.I.M.’s music.

  • Access to clean water is a human right

Access to clean water is a human right

3 months before arriving in Badboi’s motherland to shoot Vol. 2, the Philippines had tragically been struck by Super Typhoon Odette (Rai.) The devastating storm brought torrential rains and packing winds up to 160 miles per hour, comparable to a Category 5 hurricane. It crumbled homes, swelled rivers to overflow, and forced millions of people to flee their homes. Access to water, shelter, and food was among the direst needs. There was already a huge need for access to clean water in the Philippines and had all the more been magnified by the storm.

Waves for Water reacted in aiding to make existing freshwater resources potable through the implementation of portable water filtration systems, the digging and renovating of bore-hole wells, and the construction of rainwater harvesting/storing systems to equip communities with lasting access. The organization’s guerrilla humanitarianism approach does not stop at providing aid and systems but builds its local networks by seeking out and empowering individuals who choose to step up and take leadership roles in their respective communities. Those leaders then train and educate the people within the affected communities on using these resources for long-term solutions. In addition to a donation, we volunteered with Karmagawa and our Vol. 2 muse, Justine Mae Biticon to offer our support in recovery efforts.
